We had a Jag at work which ran terribly on first start up. It let someone down on a job and a poorly battery was diagnosed. After a new "Varta starta" was fitted, all the poor running, spurious warning lights etc., disappeared! Electrickery on these modern beasts!

Hopefully the Battery is the source of your issues.
my concern was your term - "A Mighty Clatter" - this is NOT how i'd describe the "Tappety" sound I experienced after fitting my New Cylinder Head. before my repairs, whilst diagnosing timing belt issues I had what I'd describe as "A Mighty Clatter" which cleared quickly - I was then left with a Poor Tickover - turns out the Mighty Clatter was Valve on Piston Contact hopefully it's just different folks use/interpretation of terminology Paul. |

Well , the new battery is starting her up fine and the alternator is supplying 14.3v at the battery so hopefully that side of things will now behave . Still perhaps an issue in that battery drain measures 0.31A Stocktake mentions that the drain might be taking place through the alternator ; anyone know how I would check this ie by connecting an ammeter to the large terminal on the alternator ?
Re the misfire , I have today swapped the plugs and coils over between cylinders 2 and 4 , hoping that the misfire code would move from cyl 2 to cyl 4 and confirm plug/coil as the culprit . It didn't , but frustratingly the misfire is not as bad as it was ! Took it for a 5 mile run today and apart from tickover and pulling away , she was running and pulling well . What's next ; injectors ?

Can any of the T4 gurus tell me how much information on my misfire a T4 diagnostic could give me ? My code reader tells me it is a misfire on cylinder 2 , but that is all . I'm not even sure that their cylinder 2 will be the same as Rover's cylinder 2
