Update: well I feel like a fool... turns out the fuses I had previously checked weren't the ones at fault and indeed fuse 36 for the alarm sounder and immobiliser had popped. One 5A fuse later and I now have fully operational remote locking. It's been a week since the fuse was replaced and it's still working so if there is any underlying issue then it has yet to rear its head.

A big thank you to Godfer for his tip!

Same symptoms here, but fuse 36 did not the trick. manual says it is for the alternator.

replacing fuse 5 (BCU) helps until ignition is switched to pos 2 again. after going back to igniotion off, locking via remote does not work again.

resync keys via testbook helps for some hours, but also not durable.

changing BCU und remote transceiver did not worker either.

Any more ideas?

UPDATE: Fuse 26 (alarm sounder and immobiliser) is the one to go for in the Mk1 fuse box in the passenger compartment

Thought I might pull a bit of an epic thread revival on this one as I was suffering the same issue, even though the fuse was in tact. I even got that paranoid that I tested the fuse with a multi-meter to confirm it wasn't blown.

I could pull the fuse, check it, put it back in and the car would lock on the remote once at best. Sometimes it would just flash the lights but not lock. Occasionally the alarm would chirp when I locked it too. But I could never get it to lock on the button a second time. Just wouldn't have it.

One of my door lock modules was 'goosed' so I decided I'd replace that thinking it must be the problem. I replaced it, tested it on the interior buttons and all worked well. Thought I'd give the remote a go and still nothing.

Again if I pulled the fuse, checked and replaced would work just the once, regardless of whether I started the car, stopped it, no combination yielded any improvement.

In the end out of utter desperation I decided I'd just replace the dam fuse anyway. As it happens I only had a 7.5a fuse on hand in the shed, so I put that in.

Works like a harm now. 48 hours and several trips / journeys and shopping with the wife and still functional. Can only assume the old fuse was giving a poor contact but a shiny new fuse has done the job.
