Can be the piston height above the gudgeon pin or the shape of the dome, or both.

In a similar vein to "show someone how to feed themselves....", what I'll say here is that you need to check the part number of a 2l piston against the part no of a 2.5 piston. If the are the same or interchangeable you can guarantee the rod is the only difference.

When my 1.8T broke the one piston and liner, I used the liner and piston from a Freelander. The difference in compression is caused by the length of the con rod, the pistons were interchangeable, although somebody says they do have different part numbers. I used it and still do but never checked the part numbers, so I don't know.

The length of the con rod only affects the compression.
And, of course, it affects the clearance between the pistons and the heads/valves.

This post is misleading, since it relates to the 1.8, not the v6. And there were various different pistons used on the 1.8k, all of which would fit, but there were differences in ring land width, valve cutouts, and even compression height.
Oddly, the v6 liner fits the 1.8, but thats all that does. If rover had used any sense they would have made the bore smaller and the stroke longer...

Hi Reece
Not intending to hijack your thread but just noticed your signature....

What is / how to use... an "auto gearbox pressure tester?"

Just curious

Nothing particularly complicated, there are a couple of tapping points on our gearbox which can help diagnose some of the mechanical problems we have. This is obviously a tool to which can make use of these points
