In order for a vehicle to be type approved, it has to have a variant and version code as there are so many vehicle versions within a manufacturers data base. There are in fact over 200 versions of Rover 75 and ZT vehicle. The variant is signified by a * for a Rover and a # for an MG. The L signifies a saloon at the T signifies a Tourer. The E is for the long wheels base R75. The H is just a code that ran next to it. The the versions are then split into it's categories depending on build level and specifications etc. As the cars moved through their life they had new emissions legislation or noise results for example so that would move the version codes on from the original 01C for example to the 04C towards the end. These codes also signify at what stage of type approval the car is at. This is the e11*98/14*0111 numbr that appears on your VIN plate below the VIN number. There is an extra two numbers that appear after the 0111 and this signifies to what extension the whole vehicle approval document has got to. The last ever whole vehicle update was extension 12 revision 21, so as you can imagine, there are hundreds of different cars we had to juggle about with. There are something like 45 pages of VIN numbers to deal with too for the car. Any questions as you'll be tested later on it!!

The 05C means that it's a version that has the 131 engine. You need to look for the variant code first if it has a * or a #.
It is variant *LH--And version 05C so it is a Rover 131 bhp..that clears that up.. never been stuck for an answer on this club..it,s the best... thanks john

Still confused
So, having read this and all (I think all) the other threads about power of diesel engines, I am still none the wiser over the power output of my new car.
I have a Dec 2003 R75 Connie SE CDTi Tourer Hi - Line. The registration book is marked as 03K and a *TH On the "How To" regarding engine power this combination can be either: An Estate Auto RHD std susp 116 ps or An Estate Auto RHD std susp 131 ps The Black label on the passenger side door pillar is not like JDCs but has 4 lines of letters and numbers as follows: 13-H-00001 34-010025 45-25-010075 21-010179 Help please - what power output does my engine have? Those numbers are European approval numbers for brakes, interiors and so on.
You need to look on your V5 registration doc and locate the sheets that I did telling you what engine output you've got. You're looking for Variant and Vesrion codes which I think you have already. However, looking at my sheets it's showing both 116 and 131 humm. It could be to do with what approval level your car was built to. That would point a bit closer but I'd need to know what the full type approval number is off your V5. You're looking for a number that starts e11*98/14*0111*XX*XX if you can find out what the numbers are denoted as X's it may give me more of a clue. What's the smoke number on your VIN plate - this will either read 1.00 or 1.33. Nic

The 03K usually indicates 116, but see if you have a sticker on the passenger door shut like the one below, as the dealer might have upgraded it.

Rincewind, Calibrax,
Thanks for your responses. Calibrax – I do not have the Xpower sticker. Rincewind – I collected the car yesterday afternoon and as such I do not have the V5. I will have to look tomorrow for the smoke number on the Vin Plate - whilst looking is there any other details I might need? Or indeed will I have to wait for DVLA. Steve |

Rincewind,
Having looked at the Vin plate earlier I scribbled down all the info on it. There is no further numbers after E 11 98/14 0111 on the next line is the VIN Then 4 lines of weights followed by Conn SE Then the paint and trim codes with a box at the end with 1.33 in it. Do these clues help identify the power or am I going to have to wait for the V5 to arrive from DVLA. Thanks Steve |
