![]() This story does the rounds every now and again but remains pure speculation at this time. JLR's purchase of the Rover name was primarily intended to secure the Land Rover brand from the likes of SAIC et al. and it could well remain that way forever.
However as the Cov Tel article suggests, the Rover name is only tarnished in the UK and remains generally well respected elsewhere in the world. Despite being attached to some highly unsuitable vehicles later in its life - the Cityrover being the absolute worst offender - Rover's heyday was in the 60's when it was known for its large imperial saloons more used to carrying ministers to parliament than granny to church on a Sunday. It is this image upon which a modern Rover could be rebuilt. JLR's marketing, design, engineering and product planning departments are white-hot at the moment and would no doubt be highly capable of reintroducing Rover, particularly into the Chinese market that JLR are aggressively targeting and expanding in. The Rover name could also provide an interesting platform for a range of smaller all-electric luxury vehicles and it is in this guise I would expect Rover to most likely return. |
