Is it leather?
On early cars with leather , are the bolsters covered in leather or vinyl ? , definitely vinyl on later models but the earlier cars feel softer ?

I am 99.9% sure leather. You can tell if vinyl or not by its flexability just by pressing down on it. Looking through a microscope you can tell too (if you know what to look out for). The difference in feel is probably because of the grade. Leathers are split and the further down the split the lower the grade.
