Winter Tyres
Hi all, I'm a new member having purchased a 54 plate MGZT-T 1.8T in August. I'm loving the car and doing plenty of miles as it's my main car for commuting across Wales and England!
I've left it a bit late as the weather is getting colder here in Wales, my attempts at research winter tyres and potentially steel wheels has gone to very little. Has anyone done this or does anyone have a suggestion. There doesn't seem to be a winter version of the standard tyre size and I can't figure out what alternative wheel and tyre combination would keep my speedo accurate. Many thanks, Chris |

You can fit any standard size wheel to your ZT unless it has had 190 discs retrofitted.
The speedo accuracy is the same unless there was 18" wheels fitted from new as any of the others will cause the speedo to over-read very slightly more than it would normally. This means you could get a cheap set of any of the standard wheels and fit winter tyres to them without any great issue. Russ

Thread moved to a more appropriate forum. Re-direct left in old. This may be the better forum as threads get ‘lost’ very quickly in the General Forum.

All-season tyres
I'm using Michelin All-Season tyres all year round and I can recommend them as price-competitive and quiet running.

I have Semperit winter tires on the Union Alloy 16" wheels. They work really fine

I've stuck with the 18" Hairpin alloys mt ZT came with and have managed to source part-worn, but excellent condition, Dunlop SPWinter tyres via eBay!
They're with 6mm evenly worn tread right across each tyre, no damage at all and cost me £160! Personally, for their use, they'll see me through 2 winters easy enough, but I do only c3k miles a year! I'd stick to part-worns if you can find them... If not, then Camskill generally have great prices, you'll just need to get them fitted! 18" ZT alloys are generally cheap too might be worth buying a second set and having the tyres fitted to those! |

I run mine on Goodyear Vector 4 seasons - a good tyre. Perhaps give a bit more 'roar' on some surfaces than summer tyres but in the recent cold damp weather they have felt very sure-footed on the greasy, frosty Fenland roads.
On our Skoda Yeti, I switch it onto full winters (Hankook winter I-Cept) in November - brilliant in the snow with the 4WD. We often go to Wales in the winter, and we have overtaken big expensive SUVs (Audi, BMW, Range Rover) that are stuck in the snow in our little Yeti on the Winter tyres - very satisfying ! Rover 75 steel wheels are hard to come by - I think there are virtually no new ones left (Rimmers had one in stock last time I looked), but you can usually find a 75 classic being scrapped with the factory fit 6J steels on it (I think the full size steel spare was a 6.5J for some reason). For me I bought a set of 15" Contour alloys for £30 and a set of part worn Continental WinterContact tyres for £90.
Much cheaper and easier than having to pay to swap tyres onto rims twice a year! I had looked for steel wheels but much cheaper and easier to buy genuine Rover alloys. 17's for the summer and the 15's for the winter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
