Default Towing mpg

Maybe I expected too much...
I thought that my zt, getting around 42 day to day would manage low to mid 30S towing.

What I got was 18mpg on the way out, 24 on the return...

My caravan is 1400kgs mtplm

What's anyone else getting?

I get 15mpg from my 1.8T auto towing a 1400kg van on country roads, 18mpg on a motorway.

I've just posted 3 years' worth of mpg figures here (post no. 30) - might have been more interesting to have put them in this thread

I get around 23-28mpg towing our 1200kg Avondale.

Being an auto, I do find that it has the tendency to select fourth gear in situations that do not require it therefore using more fuel.

Last year, we drove up a moderate hill on the A30 towards Exeter and it felt it necessary to jump down to 2nd gear - we must have been travelling at around 30mph. Been up the same hill numerous times since and never had the same happen. Car just seemed extremely sluggish that day.

Being the standard 116bhp doesn't help - I MUST get it uprated someday.

no idea of weight but it's a 5 birth caravan and I get 28 at an indicated 60mph.

mine is the 116 manual but upgrade to 160. makes a massive difference on hills but then I attack them, I don't try to cruise up them.
also able to use 5th most of the time

On my ZTT diesel I usually get around 28/30 when towing the van which weighs 1450kg when loaded.
Normal non towing consumption for me is around 42 mpg and up to 50 mpg on a long legal speed motorway run.
