I'm sure the garage would have done this but I always slacken the handbrake cable right back first, adjust the shoes & then re-adjust the handbrake cable. |

Make sure they adjust at the shoes first, not just keep tightening the adjuster nut under the lever. |

The mechanic's view was that it was too tight before and that when he had it up on the ramp the brakes were sticking, preventing the wheel from turning properly. He said that if he did it up any more then it would wear out the brakes quicker and he would advise against it, but he did say that he'd do it if I wanted him to. I pointed out that it would be an MOT failure as it was, which he denied.
As a test, while the car was still in the car park at work, me and a colleague pulled the handbrake on as hard as it would go and on a level surface we were still able to push the car with little effort. I then drove up to the mechanic's place just as he was about to finish for the night and he told me to bring it back tomorrow. I'll ask him to adjust at the shoes first, although I've a feeling he's got the hump a bit now. As I have in fact. |

You are right Ade that it would fail on that, and it seems that he has had your trade for the last time. Read up the advice given and do it yourself, then smile smugly having achieved what a "mechanic" could not.

'Twas ever thus with Rover disc brakes. That's how my friend bought his house, with the proceeds of putting to rights other garages attempts to service P6 rears.

It's a fiddly, time consuming job - but it's not very difficult. You could adjust it yourself?
