I am looking to buy a new pc monitor as mine has packed up. All I see have VGA connectors, are these as good as HDMI, AVI as regards picture quality?. Thanks, John.

I'm no expert but vga is a very old standard, would think hdmi is the way to go. Does your pc have a HDMI connector? There should be many hdmi connected monitors available - 208 listed on ebuyer.com
Many like this have both

DVI or HDMI. I use DVI on my monitor & the picture quality is superb.

VGA - 'Video Graphics Array' is an analogue system
HDMI - 'High Definition Multimedia Interface' is a digital system
DVI - 'Digital Video Interface' is a digital system.

HDMI can carry video and Audio. DVI carries only video. (VGA only carries video). Conversion between HDMI to DVI and Vice versa is only a matter of a passive connector to adapt between the plugs (obviously stripping audio out if going from HDMI to DVI). Conversion between DVI or HDMI and VGA and vice versa is possible but requires an active convertor to convert between analogue and digital.

Which is best? The digital versions are usually preferred provided the source (i.e. your pc) has a digital output (either hdmi or DVI) There's no difference in picture quality between hdmi and dvi. VGA is an analogue signal that can degrade along the cable. If you have either dvi or hdmi on your pc then it doesn't matter which your monitor is (as long as you get any necessary plug convertor) - buy your monitor based on the other specs. I would caution against buying a VGA only monitor. (some do all three + composite +component + spdif).

By VGA you probably mean D-Sub (A blue socket with 15 holes) that is newer than VGA, but is analogue as opposed to DVI (a white socket with some pins and some flat connectors) which is digital. You will get the best picture quality if you can connect with the white DVI connector, also DVI is self adjusting (actually it tells the PC the monitors capabilities). So if possible try to use the DVI connection.

Thanks for the reply, my pc has a blue vga port and a dvi port. I have gone from the dvi port on the monitor to hdmi on my pc. John.
