Big engines do generally run quite hot as its how they get their efficiency

Check for leaky stats, they can smell long before any signs of overheating occur.

Thermostat is a known problem on the KV6 and is where I would start also!

Mine with a new thermostat runs between 93-95. Long downhill sections take it to 91, as soon as you give it a little throttle it climbs to 93. Long inclines doing 50 ish will make it rise to 97 but never higher unless in slow moving traffic. No coolant loss at all since removing lower pipes.

Thread moved to a more appropriate forum. Re-direct left in old. This may be the better forum as things get 'buried' very quickly in the General Forum.

Would a leak with he coolant system cause the smell?
You need a stinkometer. Short of that, perhaps you can describe what sort of smell you are detecting. What is it like?

eg: exhaust smell or perhaps different like hot coolant

Is the smell exhaust gases? = maybe exhaust/cat leaks
Is it a fuel smell? = maybe split or broken breather pipes
Is it a hot metal smell, similar to hot brakes? = could be over hot engine caused by dodgy thermostat, faulty fan etc

Process of elimination, as much info as possible so people can advise better
