A bit of a vague question, Karl
If your bodywork is free of imperfections then a Clay bar kit would benefit it. Then a pre-cleanser, like Auto Finesse Tough Prep, a mild glase and then a good sealant and your car,s shine will last as long as you want it to, with monthly top-ups |

When you're talking about protection I guess you mean a layer that will keep contaminants from the paintwork, be sacrificial, chemical resistance and long lasting.
The 'best' would then be ceramic coating, for example Gyeon Q2 Mohs or Carpro CQUK/Quartz. However, applying this isn't something you just do on your normal sunday afternoon after the weekly wash with a brown sponge and 1 bucket filled with household APC and warm water.... A cheaper way would be to use a sealant and/or spray-on coating. For example: Chemical Guys Jetseal, or Carpro Reload. But as you could expect, the durability, chemical resistance, hydrophobic properties etc. are all a bit less then a coating I mentioned at the top. Another cheap and easy option would just be a decent wax (that means: nothing that comes from Halfords...). Every wax has it's own properties. Some add more looks, others add more chemical resistance and some even have UV filters. (but note that the effect of those UV filters is very limited and will NOT make a huge difference!) It all depends on what type of 'protection' you want and how much money you are willing to spent on it. As a guideline; the more protection, the more money it costs and the more difficult it is to apply properly.
