Smile sticky fuel gauge needle

hi there, i just bought a 2.0lt CDTi and when i got it the fuel gauge read almost empty...light on, so i dutifully put 50 quids worth in put it seems the guage pointer is getting stuck on quarter full. tap the gauge and it climbs....but then switching off and the needle wont move.

does anyone know if theres any way to cure a sticky needle, oram i doomed for a new instrument console and a big bill.

look forward to any help you can offer.

thanks all

Mine got stuck once, after it had gotten very low which I don't normally do, and after putting about £50 in it didn't move. A spirited drive around the block soon freed it off (after first going back to the fuel station accusing them of dodgy pumps )!

mine does it all the while up and down like a yo yo,just comes as a bit of a shock when you think you,ve got 3/4 of a tank and it drops down to a 1/4 of a tank, then it,s of to put another 20 quid in and it tells you it,s got a full tank, you,ve gotta love a rover!

I had this problem, was down to the fuel pump/sender... Had them replaced and it's been fine since.

I doubt that. Rather a sticking point somewhere. If a loose connection, it would not register 1/4 full. There might be a foreign matter or static electricity preventing the smooth movement of the needle.

Try and clean the glass with a moist cloth, for starters.
