Default Dongle

I'm about to change my broadband supplier. Can a 'dongle' be used instead of a cable fed broadband supplier please? Thanks.

Check which one works in the area you will be using it, there is usually a map on line. I used one for 6 months with varying success. they are cumbersome and slow but can work in the right position, also very expensive at the end of the day. I tried 3, o2 and vodafone.

I use a dongle when I'm away from home.

You need to check coverage in the area it will be used.

I'm currently with '3'. £16 a month for 15Gb usage, usage includes all traffic, both up & down.

It connects to whatever the best 3 Service is, sometimes it's the 3G network, sometimes HSPDA. Three are in the process of upgrading their network, so I should get 4G sometime.

I don't use it for ddownloading, just messing about on the internet. Some days it's painfully slow, as bad as the old dial-up days!

Thanks chaps, very helpful. I'm a bit concerned about the speed, not that I need rapid but it's all relative. Currently getting about 2g from talktalk and I'm the only user. That's fast enough (only email, surf, ebay etc) and never download anything such as tunes, films or games. So how does what speed I'm getting relate to what it would be on a dongle?

My speed varies, depending on what time of the day I use it, and where I am, even where I'm sitting in the office can affect it.

However, if you're only getting 2mb from your current ISP, then I'll tell you that no matter what, I can beat that with the dongle. Usually anyway.

Your best bet would be to take a look on various suppliers sites, and use their coverage checker.

I had an 02 pay as you go version when we recently moved house. Very slow and not a very good connection (in my area). Changed to one by T-mobile, from Car Phone Warehouse, excellent. Car Phone Warehouse were exceptionally helpful and I even bought a brand new Nokia mobile phone from them for 99p, keeping my O2 pay as you go Sim card; now I see they are selling Samsung mobile phones for 50p!
