The M47R sump tube goes straight down to the lowest point in the sump and it seems to get all the oil out. did mine stood up and didn't get dirty at all :-)

What pump would you recommend? What do you use?

It is one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEALEY-CAR...-/260920320467

'SEALEY TP69 VACUUM OIL AND FLUID EXTRACTOR 6.5 LITRES'

I got mine for £40 from a guy from work, it works a treat.

One bit of advise, suck half out, then empty the pump and suck out the remaining half. If the oil is at max level it fills up to the top and it is difficult to keep a good suction above 6 litres.

You could borrow mine for a quick journey down the M5 to Gloucester - I also have a filter socket 36 mm and some big containers for waste oil.

I use the extractor method as well. I change the oil every 7500 miles and to be honest I do not think I would do it nearly as frequently if I had to get the car on ramps etc to do it in the time honoured fashion. I may intend to but just would not get around to it.
I use one of these:

http://www.force4.co.uk/7760/Seago-O...cuum-Pump.html

I have found that surprisingly Yacht Chandlers can be cheaper than motor factors for the extractors. The one above lists several types if you search.
I guess it's a case of you get what you pay for but the one I bought was rated best budget buy in a practical boat owner test of several makes and has done the job for me although I imagine the more expensive Pela etc are better I could not really justify it for the amount of times I will use it.

Best to do it with the engine nice and warm. I did do it once without and it was very slow. Won't make that mistake again.

Saves getting under the car and taking off the sump plug :-)
I'm with you on that one Trev.. My pela removes more oil than dropping the sump.. It does take a bit longer but saves all the hassle and is a lot cleaner to..

I have only once changed a sump plug washer.. If needed I just re anneal them with a blow torch..
