Second plug in from the left on top of the ECM (only has 3 wires going in to it) Pin 10 to ground. On my car the wire was black/grey, but not listed as that colour on the circuit diagram I had - Brian came to the rescue as the colours were changed on the later cars.

When you did that, and got the engine to fire successfully, had the oil light come on ok? Also did you notice whether the CheckEngine lights behaved any differently on the occasions when it started ok vs when it wouldn't start?

Yep the oil light started doing exactly what it should. I didn't see any difference in the engine management light though.

Interestingly l first tried removing the fuel pump relay and putting a bridging wire into the power pins, but that didn't work, so there is more to grounding the control side than just running the pumps.

Well the car is now back on the road and positively flying. Many thanks to Marinabrian for his help with what turned out to be another failed ECM.

Brian diagnosed the problem, cloned a replacement ECM and waved the 'go faster' magic wand over it.

He also provided much needed wiring diagram info as the cable colours had changed for the later cars, which is much appreciated.

It now drives superbly. Just need to tidy a few things up and replace the thermostat.
