MG ZT 1.8 HGF - Parts List
As the above, what parts are required to fix this? MLS gasket best to use. Had a full cam belt and water pump change 12 months ago, but its drinking coolant ATM, been diagnosed as HGF with coolant getting onto the head and evaporating. thanks

Depends on budget and level of fix you want.
You can either go down the route of the proper xpart kit, which includes uprated land rover oil rail, mg rover designed MLS gasket which meverade it to production and is currently bekng used on chinese built engines, and revised uprated bolts. In which case you will also require correct sealant for the oil rail. Or you can go down basic cheaper fix route, which is just Head bolts (if required) MLS gasket if liners are high enough. Or Elastomer gasket if liners are flush or low (providing they aren't low because they have sunk. If you are looking to rebuild head, then it's a head set you want, if not above gasket on its own should be fine. Other things to consider, Timing belt they are cheap enough and reusing them is risky because tensioning differently or installing in opposite direction to originally installed can shorten its life. Tensioner pulley as these can fail if not changed previously Inlet manifold gaskets can leak so its recommended to change those as well. New oil, because old oil may have become contaminated. OAT antifreeze Distilled water (recommended instead of tap water because you don't get limescale problems associated with water in hard water areas that can clog rad and heater matrix) Last edited by Click4; 27th April 2013 at 15:01.. |

Before going any further make sure that it really is head gasket failure. Is there mayonnaise on the dipstick and/or in the expansion tank? How much coolant is it losing? Have you eliminated the other possibilities such as the inlet manifold gasket or expansion tank cap?
I learnt from club members experienced in the 1.8 engine that the choice of MLS or standard elastomer gasket depends upon other factors such as the cylinder liner height. So, don't rush into buying parts. Do a lot of tests and thinking to make sure that the diagnosis is correct. Then read up about it on the forum before deciding how best to tackle it. Oh, and if this is your car can you update your profile please? Simon

Head gasket failure does not always show itself as mayo on the dipstick or oil in the water. They can also go from the liner to the water channel. This will result in water loss. Symptoms are water loss and normal running for 20 – 30 then it will suddenly over heat if the car is being drive above a certain RPM. As it will be pushing the water back into the header tank. Keeping the car below 50 MPH will stop the water from being blown back and causing damage.

Thanks Wyn, I had forgotten about that possibility. I guess it's a bit tricky to identify. How would you confirm when it was happening?

Thanks guys, it's what euro rover has described, using a lot of coolant, no mayo on cap, but ou can hear water slushing about (drains checked and clear)
Its has had a full Cambelt and water change last year. It's previous had the a HGF, but appears to have been a bad repair (bolts were not very tight when checked) Looking at having this fitted + new head bolts http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-GENUIN...d=473374410969
