It is perfectly straightforward to drain correctly, add four litres, drive to warm the box up if you wish, and then check the level following the correct procedure.
And just to add, that IMO, it is more important to check that the car is completely level than to measure the exact temperature of the fluid, as I feel this would have more of a bearing on the correct transmission fluid level.
