Default Poorly ZT - urgent help/advice needed

Hi Guys I posted yesterday in the technical forum, but am also posting here.
I really need your help/advice now.

Our daily (a ZT190) overheated last Thursday and went to local garage.
They replaced the thermostat sensor but no change -the engine temperature is all over the place.

They now tell me the next stage would be strip out and clean the radiator, hoses etc. Essentially a whole days labour at over £400!
Car is worth maybe £500-£1000 in working condition (which currently it is not)

What to do?

I don't want to sell it as it (not get much anyway)
But £400 to not fix it, just explore the problem further doesn't feel sensible choice. We need a daily car, but think we're going to struggle to finance a bill of that size (and no guarantee that more doesn't need to be spent to fix it)

Can anyone help?

I am located in the York/Leeds area

Many thanks

Andrew
