Default ITP ... has mine given up?

Just out of curiosity, just how loud is the itp when listening through the filler cap? only asking as while I was fiddling about cleaning the more awkward places on my cdt I remembered a thread about listening for the pump as a guide to see if it's working.
I didn't notice any buzzing or humming of any sort tbh, having said that ... my hearing is shot to pieces anyway!
So ... am I to assume my itp may have given up? or is there a more fool proof way of finding out if it's goosed?
