I've managed to get it holding clear of the exhaust and it's doing it's job but held on by another secure method. I wonder what the next MoT tester will make of it?
My bolts were in pretty good nick. It was the heat shield that had crumbled away and dropped. Just for good measure I put any nut, screw, bolt, washer back on the car with a smear of copper grease. Adds a little protection to the part and makes it easier to remove again if necessary. I’ve just bought a selection of bolts and washers in stainless steel. Over time all the cars will have them fitted.
