Default new car paint initial protection

HI All

My missus is collecting a new car this weekend (it's a dark grey metallic) and I would really like to get some protection on the paint straight away and then wash and look after it weekly/fortnightly myself.

Can you give me some ideas of the best products to use as a first coating and then what waxes /detailing products I should continue with.

I have plenty of microfibre cloths and have just ordered a merino wool wash mitt.

I will use the 2 bucket method and possibly a snow foam attachment on a pressure washer to maintain cleanliness but I would really like to get something on the paint that will last (we've never had a new car before)

Been quoted stupid prices from dealer for "diamond paint guard" and I'm sure there must be something out there or even somewhere local to the Midlands that can put a first coat of protection on the paint.

Thanks in advance

Col
