Default petrol gauge

just recentley noticed it happening.when starting up the gauge registers full (which i know it aint) turn it of then back on and it registers half a tank (about right ) .take it for a drive and the light illuminates to say its empty .have to keep it topped up so i know i have fuel.
got it booked into mg next week .mechanic says it could be a faulty sensor but getting it done through my warranty.

THING TO DO.went out yesterday and got petrol cleaner and topped the car up.drove it all day yesterday with a heavy foot: and today.needle registering over a half.been out checking it and got the girl to take it a run to stirling. needles working fine now.
