Default in tank pump

I have just replaced the intank fuel pump on my 75 cdti tourer as its not been working for several years and wondered that if the intank pump is just for transferring fuel from one side of the tank to the other and the underbonnet pump sucks fuel from the tank for delivery to the hp pump what feeds the hp pump when the underbonnet pump was deleted on the later models, what am I missing? thanks in advance.

I thought it was the in-tank pump that was deleted on later models not the under bonnet one.

Nope was the underbonnet ones, replaced with a far more powerful in tank pump rendering the underbonet one obsolete.

If all the ITP did was keep the levels equal on each side of the saddle tank then they wouldn't have fitted them in the Freelander TD4's as they don't have saddle tanks.

Can you explain how the pump does both jobs as I do not see a physical connection to the outlet?

The ITP has to pump fuel to the UBP because if the ITP is duff the car will not run if the tank is less than 1/4 full.

But if all it does is send the fuel from one side of the tank to the other how does it compromise the ubp if not working and fuel kept above a 1/4 of a tank my itp has not been working for several years, the later cars do not have an ubp so how is the fuel delivered to the high pressure pump?

Hi Ian, I seem to recall Jules saying much the same thing, in that the in tank pump only kept the tank fuel level, but didn't send much fuel to the under bonnet one..

Logically if you upped the power on the ITPump, with an "out" feed, you could do away with the lil under bonnet one....

My lil ZX only has one pump and manages very nicely innit...
