![]() I'm pretty certain it's there as a wind deflector, to stop any chance of wind whistle from the shape of the arm.

"A plastic protector is fitted to prevent stonechip damage ... That doesn't sound very convincing to me. If a stone is at risk of damaging steel then a piece of plastic stands no chance! Simon

![]() My guess is that it is more to do with the 'grit blasting' effect of debri off the road eg salt as you drive along

![]() I reckon the prime reason is to prevent the channel sections filling with so much dirt they would end up being box section

![]() I've been asked about this a few times - in all honesty I think it's just a bit of protection from stone chips etc as the arm hangs quite low.
As mentioned by another poster, it'll also stop the arm void filling with mud - damp mud rots things incredibly quickly (especially if it contains salt)
