Default BMW MkIV sat nav clock won't set

Hi,

I've recently had my ZT-T 190 sat nav upgraded to BMW MkIV widescreen with BM54 tuner, Hybrid digital tv and Dice usb ipod interface.

The only feature I cannot setup/get to function is the clock for the sat nav system. In the 'settings menu' I can set the time however it never saves on exiting the menu. Without the clock being set when I program a sat nav route it does not show the estimated time of arrival which is a handy feature if you ever get held up or diverted.

MkIV system owners can you set your clock? and can anyone point me in the right direction to get this functioning?

Hi Rus,
mine doesn't do it either. I think the BMW's clock is digital & part of the ICE system whereas the 75/ZT's is analogue & independent. Unfortunately this means that the timer & stopwatch functions won't work either.

Basically there is nothing wrong with your system. It does make you wonder though whether getting a BMW clock unit & linking it in (but keeping it out of sight - i.e. display via computer only) would be possible.

Unfortunately what you have found is correct.
The Rover/MG cars cannot use the clock and some other functions on our BUS system I'm afraid.
No fault though.

Default BMW clock

The issue of the missing BMW clock has been discussed before.
I think Keith put in an effort to have one made up.
I built my own with the help of Jochen Siegenthaler, known as KiwiJochen on Bimmerboard. He is also the author of NavCoder, an indispensable tool in the process.

Here's a picture.

This is a picture of the circuit.

It has a realtime clock with battery backup.
The time can be set from the boardmonitor.

The time is synchronized to GPS from my MK4 navcomputer.

That would make a Handy "How To" for Club Members with MK4's.

Hi Hans,
this looks good. Does it allow you to use the timer / stopwatch function in the computer too?

Default ibus clock, more info

The circuit design is my own.
It comprises an Ibus integrated circuit[Melexis TH3122], a microcontroller[PIC16F88] and a realtime clock chip[DS1307] with associated crystal and battery backup.

Kiwijochen provided me with the necessary info on the ibus messages involved in setting and displaying the time and date on the boardmonitor.
Jochen's help enabled me to write the software to program the microcontroller.

The software receives and decodes all messages on the bus.
On startup the navcomputer requests current time and date from the IKE [Instrument Cluster].
My circuit intercepts this request and replies, pretending to be the IKE.
After that it broadcasts the time and date message every minute.

Synchronizing to GPS time is a 'sexy' feature but the circuit works fine without it, with an accuracy equivalent to a quarz clock.

The Melexis TH3122 chip is difficult to source in small quantities. I got mine from Rolf Resler [the IBUS interface guy] at 10 euros a piece ex postage.
Soldering this chip is not everyone's cup of tea.

If sufficient members are interested I could have some pcb's made by a pcb shop.

Don't pin me down but I would 'guesstimate' a minimum cost of 50 euros for the board plus the parts.

Note:
The tripcomputer display and timer/stopwatch function on the boardmonitor should work but I can't be sure because I do not have it in my Instrument cluster.

Let me know what you think.

Default T4 session

Had a T4 session on Wednesday at my friendly MGR garage Veenis B.V. in Assendelft NH.
Think it was under Dealer Configuration at the "NSEW" symbol where it said "No Navigation".
Changed that to "Hi Line Navigation".
T4 then reported "ECM software" out of date, Load new software? YES.
Loading new software took 8 minutes.
To ensure uninterrupted power, the mechanic routinely connected a small battery charger.
All done in about 10 minutes and was charged a soft fee of 15 euros only.
Where before all fields were empty, I now have this:

Quite chuffed with the result also because the numbers make sense[metric settings].

Now after connecting the ibus clock with extended functionality I have this:

I entered a nearby destination in the navigation system.

The arrival time is constantly updated depending on progress and stoppages.
Also the distance and consequently arrival time is being adjusted automagically when the TMC reports a traffic jam and the nav computes an alternative route.
Good stuff.

Distance to travel and arrival time on the navigation display:

A shot of the timer menu showing stopwatch and interim time values:

The "Limit" setting is not functional, don't know why, maybe because I don't have the message centre (High Line Pack).

Let me know what you think.
