Angry MG ZT 190 engine failure on motorway!

Under the heading 'believe it or not', I purchased a new battery after last week's forum advise and she went like a bird - until today. A day of 36 degrees centigrade, motoring at 100kph on freeway with aircon on and the engine simply stopped operating. Managed to roll over into emergency lane. Have not much to add except the check engine light then came on - most helpful - and she wouldn't start again. $200 ride on tow truck later, and she is sitting at the mechanic's, who is on holidays!!. I am ready to push her over a cliff but would like any suggestions for her obituary!! Cheers Donthemac

I hate to say it Don, but one of the cambelts may have broken. I hope I'm wrong.

I hope you are wrong too, Simon, as I had all belts replaced 14,000km and 19 months ago.

That's my first instinct as well. With most other failures there will be some tell tail before hand, loss of power, change in temp, warning lights etc however with a cambelt failure it just goes with no warning. Had exactly the same thing happen to me on a Hyundai years ago. Driving down the M6, 70(ish)mph engine just stopped and the warning lights came on. Managed to get to the hard shoulder and when I tried to restart it could tell from the sound straight off that the cambelt had failed.

Fingers crossed though...............

I had the exact same problem, the car just died with no warning and the engine light came on.

In my case it turned out to be a fuse! I'll double check, but I think it was fuse 4 in the fuse box in the engine bay!

Did you change the pulley's and tensioner as well? Easy and cheap while doing belts, ultra expensive if not and one breaks!

talk about scare mongering.... did the engine turn over and you see the aux belt turning .may be the fuel pump or pressure regulator.if pressure isnt there ecm would shut down the engine could be any one of about a dozen things that would of made the engine stall ,for the belt to hav snapped you would of heard some nosie befre hand .as i said may be any thing from a fuse blowing to a ecm fault .still your soon know when your mechanic as back.could even be the alternator not charging and was ust running on battery ...............may even be just be a senor like cam sensor that has failed .no cam sensor working the car will stop .oh hows the coil packs.

I would disagree with that, when my cambelt went (admittedly on another make of car) there was absolutely no indication before hand, no noise, no rough running, no lights, nothing. One minute the car was running fine and the next it wasn't. Most annoying thing for me was that the cambelt had been replaced just 10k before

Yes there are many other things it could be, was just posting my experiences on the subject, which is after all what this forums about.

i have found that when we have had cars towed in with suspcted broken belts all the owners have said the had been a noise before ,possible tensioner slackened, very unlucking t0 not of heard any change in engine sound of any nosies at all.yes i agree it can be a broken belt but there are lots of other things it may too.i would say cam sensor has gone .camsor gets tdc from crank sensor and is responable for telling ecm when to earth the injectors, so no signal no fuel engine will stop and engine wont restart ...
