Default 2002 Rover 75 - Parking Sensor Fault

The park distance control system on my 75 saloon isn't working properly. When selecting reverse I get a continous beep for around 8-10 seconds and then nothing when approaching an object.

I've listened for ticks/clicks and all 4 sensors are making the noise. I scanned the PDC module with TOAF which found an error:

Is the "rear left" sensor the one on the very corner, or just to the left of the middle of the car?

TOAF is giving data cable to battery and ground errors, so I'm inclined to start by checking the connector and giving it a clean with some electrical contact cleaner. Failing that, I'm thinking either an internal short within the sensor, poor connection at the PDC module or a break in the wires somewhere. Are there any common causes I should look out for?

Thanks for your help

My first port of call is the controller in the right rear wheel well.

Pull out the white one and give the pins a gentle polish. Seldom fails for me.

Thanks Derek. I'll give that a go first as it's probably a bit easier than pulling the bumper off. I suspect there has been boot water leaks in the past so corrosion could be a potential cause.

Hi Matt.
If it anything like this one it is bound to fail.
1

Found behind the boot covering right hand side, as soon has i started to remove the black & white connectors you could see the problem.
2

3

Old one next to the replacement module.
4

Once opened up you could see the internal damage.
5

6

It also stopped the T4 from gaining access.

7

It took quite a time to clean the connector using a tooth brush and contact cleaner, fitted the replacement module and all was well, you could try one from your other cars to see if that sorts the problem.

Thank you, very helpful as always. Your reference image library must be vast! I hope its not as bad as that one. Unfortunately my other cars don't have parking sensors, so will have to judge based on physical condition and have a look on eBay etc. should I require a replacement.

Connections to the module look perfect:

With where it's mounted on my car, horizontally under the navigation computer, water damage seems unlikely. I couldn't see any evidence of water ingress on that side of the car too, but could see a little on the Nearside.

Next step is bumper off I think.

Had the bumper off today. Cleaned and checked all the connections, no difference. Swapped plugs around and the error (as reported in TOAF) moved to whichever connector was plugged in the left corner sensor. I therefore believe the wiring and connections to be sound and the sensor itself at fault.

On a side note, when TOAF says "rear left" sensor fault, it does indeed mean one on the corner of the car. The one nearer the middle of the car comes up as "rear middle left" should it have a fault.

To close out this thread, a replacement parking sensor (part number YDB100360) fixed the problem.
