There was, and probably still is, a terrific amount of competition between the top manufacturers for 'market share'. Each month, the number of each model registered, is published and each manufacturer wants to be the one with the biggest share. It was not unknown for companies to pre-register a certain number of new vehicles, if they thought they were not doing too well in a particular month. These vehicles were sometimes used as 'in house' company cars, sold on to fleets for leasing, or pushed out to dealers as 'nil mileage' pre-registered cars, at an advantageous discount. Dealers themselves often pre-registered cars to meet the sales targets/bonuses set by the manufacturer.
Another factor is that manufacturers need to make a certain number of units in a given period. If orders don't come in at the rate of production, they have a problem. It is not easy to shut down, or slow down, the very complicated production methods used these days. Therefore, most companies will keep production steady, and keep the surplus stock created in slack sales periods, disposing of it in various ways in future months. Nissan in Sunderland (I think), actually only make cars to order and therefore can project how many actual cars are needed for orders received. They would therefore not be building cars for stock and do not have the problem that other companies, such as Ford, BMC/BL/ARG/MGR, etc., used to have. Outside component manufacturers also need to know how many cars their customers are going to make, to avoid any 'parts' shortages. Roverite. Last edited by Roverite; 1st September 2013 at 13:14.. |

My wife's Renault Meganne was the same, previous keeper was Renault UK. The car was sold as new, with a couple of miles on the clock. I was a amazed when the V5 had a former keeper entered.
