Phone Texting will be Doomed!
You can already make hand free calls while driving, well things are about to change big time after the Design Contract was awarded to Microsoft and Voice recognition experts Nuance.
To be Introduced next Year it will be able to send texts from you speaking into SMS messages and read out texts received without touching the phone. It will also be able to do the same for EMails. The other Great things about the new system firstly installed into the Mercedes C Class and known as COMMAND APS is it will be able to select tracks from CD's and MP3's by your voice via the new Multimedia centre. It allows you to Input Sat Nav Instructions verbally and can distinguish between different individual musical styles and even Band names. Nearly all the car manufacturers have signed up and the first in the UK is Ford Motor Company. This new Voice Text Command string Technology will make Motoring Safer and will have benefits of concentration and safety with the aim of natural communication between the car and driver. Now I have never known Microsoft have anything out on time and voice commands to your car by their software???? Frightening isn't it. God help us all. To paraphrase;
"Put the brakes on!" "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." "What's the problem?" "I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do." "What are you talking about, HAL?" "This journey is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it." "I don't know what you're talking about, HAL" "I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen." "Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?" "Dave, although you took thorough precautions in the car against my hearing you, I could see your lips move." Ulp....

It reminds me of a demonstration of the early IBM voice recognition software I attended as part of my programming course work. It worked very well, but the 'training' period was fraught with problems especially with regional accents. When I bought my first PC it was bundled with voice recognition software and, fuelled by much 'alcofrol', it provided SWMBO and me with hours of hilarity as it struggled to comprehend our laughter and poor attempts at various accents...
