Default Tip for removing rusty hubs?

Hi,

I tried to adjust the handbrake at the hubs on the weekend.

I eventually managed to get the wheel off, couldn't find the adjuster (found the spring).

Couldn't get the hub off.

I have bought some plus-gas and a heavy duty rubber mallet. I plan on giving it a good spray then hammer time!

Anyone got any tips?

Cheers
John

Do you mean the brake disc or the hub? AFAIK you only need to get the discs off to adjust the handbrake (although you can even adjust it through the wheel with the wheel on and a bolt off!)

My fault...its the disk I need to remove.

I have tried to adjust through one of the holes but can only find the spring not the adjuster.

Everythin is seized on, must have been years since they were last removed.

Have another crack at it this weekend if its dry.

Cheers
John

John, did you remove the retaining bolt on the face of the disc (might be hidden with the rust)

The torx one?

Yes that came out quite easily, surprisingly enough.

You remove the caliper, then one recessed Torque bolt (in the circle of wheel studs) and the drum/disk should then come free.

DO NOT UNDO the large hub nut in the centre.

If the drum/disk is loose, but still not coming off, all that could be holding it is a circle of rust at the back of the shoes in the drum. If so so, some persuasion may be needed if you cannot find the adjuster to back it off.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Stupid question, but the handbrake is off, yes? The handbrake will "grab" the disc and then it wont come off!

Good point and the same answer might explain inability to turn the adjuster too.

you know what, as stupid a question as that may seem. i bet it is far more a common mistake than we could imagine.

1, apply handbrake,
2, chock wheels
3, loosen wheelbolts
3, jack up car

I say stupid question as it's the mistake I kept making trying to change the rear discs for the first time!
