Default FAO: Halcyon - What is a Dennis?....

Dennis is a fuel supply pump for the the fuel burning heater (fbh) on a diesel car.
it has an electrical connector and a pipe in (from the fuel tank) and a pipe out to supply the fbh.

These often get extremely rusty in their exposed location as does the mounting bracket.

Cars without an fbh still have the pipes and bracket but with a blanking piece made of plastic in the place of the pump. The feed from fuel tank to the pump is syphon/gravity fed. You can disconnect the feed from the tank and blow in air (i'd use an air pump!) to send the fuel back up the pipe to the fuel tank. Which should prevent any more fuel coming from the tank. If you do have an fbh fitted and working then it's worth investigating replacement with a working (and non-leaking!) pump.

I though Dennis was the name of elderly fire men,as when I was a kid they all had DENNIS on the front of their fire engines similar to what HGV drivers do now with their names on number plates on the dash

Spot on Allan - my Dad was a Fireman, and his name is Dennis. As for being elderly, let's just say he has been retired for the last 35 years.

I thought it was weird that all the Appliances had his name on the front when I used to play on them as a kid back in the day.

In the early Sixties they were beautiful machines - coachbuilt with plenty of wood and leather and a sweet Rolls Royce petrol engine.

Hi it has to be said that not only did they build fire engines they built trucks or lorries depending on what you call them. They also made Tractors one of which I saw working down in Longton a few years back. They also made what the Fire service called feather weight pumps. Thank goodness they were featherweight as they were a four man lift, before the days of mad Health and safety.

Yes they were local to me, being just up the road in Guildford. Had a few mates who worked there back in the day.

Funnily enough I never heard the Firemen refer to their vehicle as a Fire Engine - it was either the Appliance, or the Machine.
