Rover 75 con 2.5 auto overheating
Hi everyone. I recently bought a Rover 75 con 2.5 auto with 113k on the clock, with full service history including recent belt change. On friday afternoon it started to overheat at traffic lights a couple of hundred yards from my home. The temp gauge went back to normal after a few mins so I drove home. Saturday morning when I checked the coolant levels it was possible to add 2 ltrs to top it up. I drove the car 20 miles yesterday and let it tick over for 15 mins without any sign of overheating or coolant loss. There is no sign of mayo on the oil filler cap or oil in the water.
Should I take it to the Rover garage and have it checked out or are there some checks I could do myself? I will be going on a 60 mile run tomorrow but really dont feel very confident, having read some of the HGF threads on here. Thank`s for any help, Tom (new member) |

Sounds like it could be a cracked thermostat housing, it is a bit of a weak spot. Look for orange coolant staing in the Vee of the engine. Probably be a couple of hundred pounds to fix. Head gasket failure is pretty rare on the v6, thankfully!
Hope this helps Boz |

Either way best not to drive it until sorted. Low coolant in the KV6 risks significant damage.

And of course there is the radiator fan to consider. If this does not come on then the car can overheat and blow coolant out of the header tank past the pressure cap. However, the thermostat sounds quite plausible too.

The latest development is, on leaving the car to tick over for about 20mins the fan apeared to cut in every few minutes (to be honest I couldnt really tell) and there was a small amount of steam coming from the rediator just below the expansion tank. The temp gauge remained normal. Theres no staining near the v of the engine. Thank`s Tom.

The problem was diagnosed by ex Rover dealer Arnold Clarke as a faulty fan and motor. Total cost for diagnostics and replacement is £594. Picking it up tomorrow and will report back if its fixed or not (better be for that price).
Thank`s for all the help. Tom. |

Hi, just seen this thread, Hope that was your problem, check the coolant level regularly, when cold for a while. Did you tell the garage about the above?

well all appears to be ok, no overheating or coolant loss. The garage said they had tested it, and it had been driven at least ten miles when I picked it up. Lets hope that was the cause.
Thank`s for all your help. Tom. |
