Default Strange noise when starting the engine ??.

So this only started earlier, when I turn the key there is a sort of grinding noise just before the engine fires up. It starts ok but the noise is terrible. I don't know what it is, starter motor maybe , so any advice would be great thanks.

Does the noise stop once the engine is running?

Yes, only does it when you are starting up, once running everything else is fine.

Well in that case it could be a number of things. Ideally it would be good to get someone to start the car with the bonnet open and your ear facing the engine to try and determine where the grinding noise is coming from.

Auxiliary belt bearings could be dry?

Belt tensioner bearing is a common one to whine at start up then disappear when warm.

Mine very occasionally does that, scares me witless! Seems to be usually when starting the engine when warm and turning the key quickly, though it is very intermittent, maybe once a month. I turn the key straight back off again, and normally start the car without a problem second time round. I will be picking it up when the next service is due if it can wait another few months, but my understanding was that it could be due to starter problems and these tend (in the V6) to be rather expensive to fix so I am hoping it won't be too troublesome.

Yes im sorry. Then you really need to find out roughly where the grinding is coming from.

Top, middle or bottom of engine?..Left or right?

It could be something to do with the starter motor.

Im no expert just trying to help..

Right so yet another big bill, if that's the case then it may be the end of the road for the car as every bill now seems to be a big one..

Ros, i too feel your woes. Im running my lovely R75 on basically peanuts at the moment.

In fact id rather go hungry and spend a few quid on my car when she needs it.

Im no expert on the v6 but i rekon it can be sorted out fairly easily with the guys on here.

Im hoping someone with more XP can comment and help you out.

Im sure they will..

Yep I get whet your saying mate, totally understand. It's just that there comes a point, the car is 14 years old with 100.000 on the clock and is now staring to show it's age. I don't have deep pockets like some on here and simply cant keep throwing money at an old car. I need something reliable and reasonable to run and lately every bill has been a big one.

It's simply a case of it's an old car and I'm fed up of repairing parts that have now reached the end of there life...
