Default Saloon rear screen trim

My 75 Contemporary has the bright surround trim with a black rubber-like material each side. I'm about to fit a pre-owned replacement as the black stuff on original has (as usual) disintegrated. It's not rubber so I guess some form of vinyl and I want to give it a bit of treatment to help it stay bonded to the bright trim for as long as possible. Is there a product out there that anyone can recommend that will keep it supple for longer - the trim removal once fitted is a bit tricky and I can always treat the outer face but not the 'underside'.
