Default Spitfire crash near RAF Coningsby.

Crashed in a field near the base at 1-20 this afternoon.Sky news just reported that a statement from the RAF said the pilot has sadly died.

RIP

The aircraft appears to be belly down with the engine where it should be, must have arrived on a very flat approach.

The nearby bungalow looks to have had a close call, seems to have finished up at the edgeof the garden.Must have been a serious malfunction being so close the base.

BBMF have grounded all their aircraft until the investigation is competed. They were supposed to take part in the D Day Commemorations at Portsmouth on the 5th June, looking very doubtful.

A terrible loss, my thoughts are with the pilot's nearest and dearest.

I found this video regarding MK356 very interesting

Thanks for posting Jim.It had a long and distinguished life.Ironic that a peace time flight should see it's demise and that of the pilot. And indeed, condolences to the pilots family, fellow RAF personnel and friends.I read that he was a serving Typhoon pilot based at Coningsby and was due to take over the running of the Memorial Flight next year.
