Default KV6 Owners, a quick question

When your car is ticking over and you remove the oil filler cap, do you get any smoke whisping its way out?

I've just returned form a 30 mile journey and went out to check. With the car ticking over there is nothing. not even a fine mist.

Hi Dave sorry to read about your woe's. Whisps of smoke can be an indicator of a worn engine, ie bores, rings, valve stems etc, lets hope it's not to serious mate.

There shouldn't be anything if the engine has been warmed up.
If you see mist, it is likely to be steam, from water in the oil.
Check the oil filler cap, when cold, for water droplets or mayo.
If you find that, you have water seeping into the oil.

Dave difference between steam and oil smoke. Steam avoid at all cost as no steam should be created in the engine. Smoke could also be as a result of poor oil used, oil not changed regularly possibly resulting in sludged engine breather. doest neccesarily be engine is poor.

I was just in the middle of posting roughly the same advice.

I don't know of many people who would change their oil before selling.

If you want a second opinion, I'm more than happy to have a look for you.

I don't think I can imagine smoke coming from the inside of an engine (burnt oil) unless you have a cracked piston or thereabouts, but then you should have much more to worry about! Small amounts of smoke from blow by is possible, but you would not be able to see it for the smoke coming from the exhaust, if that was the case.
Outside smoke yes, for sure, but if it is burnt oil from the inside, then the engine is not worn, it is terminal.

Wish I could help you out mate but I am just so busy with work at the moment. I am sure that Russ will be a great help though.
