Default Headlamp washer leak

Hi all

Have a mk2 2005 with headlamp washers. The headlamp washer is not sealing perfectly at the pump, so I get a small constant drip where the retaining clip holds the feed pipe in place.

Have replaced the seal - old one was a little pinched. Was OK for a while, but now dribbling again.

Not a biggie, but would like advice on how to sort. Some sort of extra rubber seal needed? It is quite a tight fit when I remove and try to reseat.

Headlamp washer is new as previous owner bodged it with a screw through the washer output - presumably to "fix" the leak.

Thanks

Andrew

I have the same problem at the moment when I replaced the washer pump. Will be interested in the suggestions here

I had the same problem - it was the stupid fiddly clippy hose thing on the pump.

I replaced it with a regular push fit hose and all was well.

Unfortunately it broke so I need to do the same again!

EDIT - No, it didn't break. It's been there for a few years. I secured the end with a cable tie because I wanted to be doubly sure.

Thanks. So something like a hoselock type push connector? Obviously not quite so big!

No I just meant pushing the hose over it!

I found a tight fit with that worked better than a bunch of O-Rings and clamps.

It's now the windscreen washers one work afterall.

Not sure my hose is pliable enough. It is enough of a job getting the right angle connector on! Doubt it could bend that much.

Mine had the connector cut off due to it leaking. I then attached it with a jubilee clip.

The pump will move through 180 degrees so the hose will be fine and it won't damage the pump either.

Thumbs up Update

Today I have fixed the leak, it seems. As said previously, have gone down the route of just using hose on the headlight washer and a connector.

The hose I used needs to be 3/8 inch inner diameter (9.75mm - 10mm would probably be OK). Got a 90 degree connector to fit the hose. This was exceedingly expensive - 2 jubilee type clips, 1 foot of hose and the connector £2. Get from an aquarium shop. Just cut a bit of the headlamp hose to get the old snap fit connector out as it was tight. You will probably need to prise the retaining metal clip off as well. Putting the hose in hot water would probably have helped (did not think of that until later!).

I used around a 4 -5 cm length of tubing. The hose for the headlights was put in a jar of just boiled water - very hot! Made it pliable and connector slipped in a treat. Put a jubilee clip on and tightened. Other end of 90 degrees connector was joined using 3/8 in hose. Just put in jar of hot water for a minute then slid on and pushed connector inside hose and washer outlet at other end, so they touched inside the hose.

Headlamp washers now much better - one always dribbled before - the other was fine. Now they both squirt a powerful jet.

On small bore hoses use an "O" clip, you just need to crimp each side with side cutters or similar, a jubilee clip doesn't give even pressure on small bore pipes.

See here. http://www.zeroclips.com/products/O-...-O-Clamps.html
