Question Front Speaker replacement

Hi All,

I am looking for some advice/help with replacing the front speakers for some aftermarket units.

First and foremost, I am on a very limited budget of about £75 for the replacement of the fronts and don't particularly want to be buying and wiring up amp/subs etc. (Not that the budget will allow this anyway).
Secondly, I want to, in the future, replace the rears also.
Finally, My head unit, Clarion FZ501E outputs 50W (Presumably RMS) per channel (4 CH) into a 4 Ohm speaker.

So here are my initial questions to aid the choice of replacement speakers;

Am I correct in assuming that for maximum power delivery from the head unit, the speakers I choose as replacements, must be 4 Ohm Impedance since the head unit spec quotes 4 Ohms?

Am I correct in thinking that, the lower the Sensitivity over the quoted operational frequency range, the better?

What is the maximum depth the speakers can be without using mounting rings etc?

What is the diameter of the mounting hole for the tweeters?

Whilst I understand that asking "What is the best speaker" is a bit subjective, what are your opinions, given the very strict budget?

Many thanks in advance.

Well I can answer one question - higher sensitivity means louder given the same input. i.e. 93db/watt is twice as loud as 87db/watt (figures usually given as per watt when measured at 1metre, but should always state that, otherwise they are meaningless. e.g. might really mean 93db/watt at 0.5 a metre which would be quieter than 87db/watt at 1 meter!).

So higher is better but don't get too hung up on that, particularly on your budget.

I had a hunch this was correct from the old days of electronics at college! explained HERE

I believe it is 60mm

I will dig out the factory ones and measure it!

Default re speakers

I believe they are 165mm with a max mounting depth of 65mm (retaining the original speaker rings), tweeters are 25mm. Original (not kh) are 20w 4 ohm affairs with crossover, the rear are the same but no tweeter installed - possibly there is if you have the kh set up.

I am awaiting some Hertz DSK170.3 to arrive, these are shallow and should pose no fitmant issues, also some Hertz DCX170.3 Coaxials for the rear on way. I have heard these in action, no amp, no deadening and they sound superb. I am not a bassjunkie, but I like bass to thump rather than f-rt. Admittedly I have bought MDF speaker mounts (not rings) for the front and some sound deadening stuff.

Where is that pigging postman!! wanna fit em now..

i'v just upgraded my door speakers in the front and rear for these, they are very good for the money and a doddle to fit,no speaker rings required, just drop them in and drill holes in the speaker pods, screw them down and away you go

Just for info, those ready made mdf brackets from blasser do not fit, well the holes are right for mounting, but the ring is 90 % useless and they are not contoured to fit, I basically chopped all of the ring away except a 50 - 60mm section at the bottom.
Great idea, but more effort required to say they 'fit', i.e actually trying them in a car and modding until they fit - then put em up for sale.
Fitting the Hertz tweeters was a royal faff, and they are slightly too small, but sorted that, sound really good..now waiting for the rear speakers to arrive.from pigging Italy..thanks for nowt Amazon...the beauty of these speakers is the shallow mounting depth...no worries about window clearance.

Steve - a query on the FLI speakers. I am in the middle of fitting some (did the rear first) and find they are ab out 3mm too large to fit inside the original mount rings.

Are the front rings different do you know? or maybe speaker size has been changed a little?

Thanks

Mike
