Recently had HG replaced, the later improved part, however still losing coolant and my garage (ex Rover main dealer) appears unable to rectify despite 5 attempts. Does anyone know would HG fail again if coolant level falls too low, or could end result be a lot worse? If i make a sixth visit to my garage what should i ask/demand?

Hi Paddy.

It is often helpful to note where in the country you are located as then local members may be able to suggest a suitable specialist near you.

If the HG is failing again that might suggest a warped head. I am not technical though so will leave it to the more experienced members to guide you.

Best of luck.

Derek

Cheers Derek

I live in Co Antim, N Ireland.

As part of original job the head was skimmed, also the car is still under the dealers warranty. They are happy to make the repair, but just dont seem able to do it properly.

To date i have returned the car 5 times, but the problem still exists and i have a fear of a serious breakdown on a long trip.

Thanks again.

You can usually tell where a leak may be by the tell tale red colour left by evaporating OAT coolant. The HG will fail again if the engine overheats so keep a close eye on what's going on.
The garage should be able to pressure test the system to locate any leak. Could always be the header tank lid as well they wear out and need replacing.
