Washing machines
Anyone know much about them? Ours is about 10/12'years old now, still, works fine, but over the last week or so when it comes to the spin cycle, it's rattling and banging away like a car with no exhaust system . Any ideas what it could be,and is it worth repairing ? it's a Hotpoint

Washing machines live longer with Calgon......sorry Richard, couldn't resist
As Pete said really, perhaps time to get an appliance engineer out although at twelve years old it may be time to think about a replacement

As a former complaints/customer service advisor in the electrical retail trade I would hazard a guess it's the drum bearing. Given the age of the machine I would suggest you buy a new machine. Either go all out and buy a Miele, or failing that a Bosch, Hotpoint aren't what they used to be following their take over by Indesit IMHO. Last edited by alanjay; 14th March 2015 at 21:53.. Thanks for the replies gents, I just had a look at a common faults in washers site, as you say sounds like bearings, but when you push the drum ,it feels, very slack,it pushes in out, should this be? Wondering about springs

The counterweight may have come loose, which may account for the 'slack' feel when pushing the drum.

What's that? I took the lid off before and had a feel of the drum rotation, doesn't feel'or sound bearing related, but the drum is lift able top to bottom movement and the same ,in and out movement. There is a concrete block in the top,of the drum.

Drum
Hi Richard
If you can move the drum in and out or up and down then it's the bearings that support the drum this is usually coupled ( but not always ) with a rusty stain running down the rear of the drum (remove rear panel) as the seal fails and the rust from the bearings escapes Regards Steve Last edited by steveo; 15th March 2015 at 05:58.. |

Calgon is expensive. I suppose if you kept the cost of it aside every week you could buy a new machine after a couple of years...
