Brothers got a ST 225. He has a hand held device by which he can program the cars ECU - it's a bit like a fault code reader. He can program in different maps. I think it's currently running at a low torque setting at around 280BHP. When I say low torque it's all relative-it will push you back into your seat if you floor it at 45mph in 5th gear. He's got it on low torque to let the clutch last a little longer!

I don't think the Mk1 RS was considered in this thread, however if I was given the option to own a Focus RS, it would be the Mk1. Even if it's not as powerful on paper, it's a much better looking and built car than the newer ST/RS. Much more classy.

I have had both, and they are very different animals. If the Focus MK2 ST is a dolphin, the RS MK2 would be a shark!
Apart from performance, the suspension is much firmer, steering sharper, and has a system call Revoknuckle, which reduces torque steer. Fuel economy was actually better than with my ST. Both MK2's use the 2.5 litre 5 cylinder 20 valve engine from Volvo. The MK1 RS, very different as well, this is a far more nimble car. Not so much out right speed as both the ST and later RS, but still very quick. MK 1 Focus ST also handled very well, with uprated steering and gearbox, and variable valve timing, but offers not much more than a regular 2.0 Focus With both RS's I felt that as a competent driver it was capable of more than I could do in it. On the other hand, with the ST I felt I could perhaps find its limits! Here are my former beauties: MK1 Focus ST170 (170) MK1 Focus RS (212) MK2 Focus ST-3 (225) MK2 Focus RS (300) .. and yes I now own a Rover 75 instead Last edited by Sidetops; 1st November 2013 at 15:38.. |
