Default Bonnet struts

I noticed earlier, whilst opening the bonnet to change a headlight bulb, the gas struts felt weak. Is it a thing when they are really cold, say -2 oC, they are going to lose strength, or do I need to replace?

Hi Michael.
I should imagine that by now they will need changing, link below for you.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll add them to the to do list. I don’t fancy the bonnet crashing on my head due to a gust of wind!

I havethe SGS nitrolift struts on the boot and bonnet. They are very good. The boot is hard to push up and when up will never come down on its own. Had them for around 3 years.

while thinking what to do - I cut a piece of wooden brush handle to size that rests horizontally across the front of the engine bay with the bonnet closed and I place vertically when needed.

We have them here: https://www.dmgrs.co.uk/products/rov...kk500010-oem-q

Tried and tested by us, and they're slightly stronger than the originals too (about 8% more lifting force).

I fitted mine from DMRGS,, and the bonnet lifts up by itself soon as released.

You will find that gas struts become less effective when it's colder - basic physics - but not by a huge amount. I've noticed it mainly on my boot struts, probably as i'm in there nearly every day - in the summer the boot will be propelled skywards quite rapidly but about now it may just need a little human assistance. These are SGS nitro struts I fitted about 18 months ago.

I have the same problem with boot struts from SGS, they have to be pushed up for the last 1/3rd of movement. I sent back the ones they supplied originally and they said there was no fault and were returning them back, they lost them so had to send another new pair which were no different.
I just put up with it but a regularly clonk to my forehead keeps reminding me that I need to remember push the lid up!!
