[/IMG][/IMG]As i was at breakers and also considering the handbrake compensator modification, thought i'd buy used one and have a look,£3 later and home spent 5 mins doing this, cheapskate i know but i bet it works for a few yrs and in the meantime i might pick up a stainless steel shackle for a pound or two in case i decide to do a better job later, but then again i dont buy stainless steel pants , so why bother

I think if it wasn't so much hassle getting to the compensator, I might have had a go at doing something similar. However, I'm really glad I have put one of the beefed up ones in there.

However, well done!

as i'd done one before on my previous 75, i think i can change it quite quickly second time round, I was on the verge of placing the order for the stainless steel mod ,but then thought why spend that amount when i have to take it out and have it in my hand, might as well have a go at a fix, it doesnt take 5 mins and could have bought the shackle but as my car did 134,000 miles on original(i presume)this one would/should get me a good few miles!Especially as its an auto and i dont tend to use handbrake!

Default Mini Compensator Mod

I came across this on one of the other threads started by Arctic (Thanks so much!) The component from the Mini is a perfect replacement and isn't ever going to go wrong. I got mine from here and fitted it last weekend. I know Arctic's guide shows how to do this with the console still partly in place but I decided I would be faster and find it easier to remove the seats and console. Once this was done it was a piece of cake and it's marvelous having a fully functioning handbrake.

it is a commendable effort, and the type of thing I like to do. Alternative solutions from a box of bits. However, the bar still has the potential to stretch, for instead of pulling on the 'button' of the compensator, it will pull on the nut instead, which will pull on the 'button'. It will extend the life of the compensator though. Perhaps something on the upper bar, will stop it taking stretch too, but the steel bar is stretchable.

The jublee clip, may simply bulge and distort but I dont think that will be an issue.

The mini solution is the neatest, although more expensive, in my opinion. (just checked that link for eBay! I wish it was available when I changed mine
