Default ABS/Brake fault lights, no speedo

I have an ongoing problem which wass originally just occasional, but is now permanent.
As in header, yellow abs, red brake lights on, no speedo (& thus no cruise either). I've changed the blue connector to the o/s/f wheel (actually now hard-wired through).
I had this fault years ago with a different car (same model) and had to change the multiway plug on the abs unit (under the battery) so have gone there.
As I stripped the last car I kept the abs unit & plug which was working ok. The plug has now been spliced on to the loom under the battery. Actually I used (as before) crimp connectors. One anomaly though; an extra wirein the loom, with no pin in my plug! I took one out of the old plug and fitted it to the new one, joining it to the loom in the present car.
When initially reconnected, and upon starting the car I found lights still on. So I tidied the tools away then started it again, some success! Red brake light now off, speedo working, yellow abs light still on though. This all appeared intermittent over the next 2-3 short journeys, so I had another look at that pin in the plug. As suspected, it was not seated properly and had pushed out. Another attempt at locating it was made, & the little rubber seal was firmly pushed in to hold it. All to no avail.
So, I stripped it down again, with the aim of removing the electronics bit of the abs from the hydraulics bit. I'd already removed the first bracket, but could only remove the 3 left torx screws., I couldn't access the other 3. So I tried to remove the 2nd bracket, but the 13mm screw head was rounded due to being excessively tight. I have limited access to remove it, any ideas? Do I need to remove it? Is the abs unit actually the fault?
