75 diesel auto 2003 ABS light on.

Out and about this morning and the 75 developed a bit of brake squeal when braking. A little while later ABS warning light came on (coincidence?). Parked up for an hour came back drove off and light illuminated about a minute later.
Can a generic OBD reader be used on these before I start inspecting each sensor?
Any advice greatly received!!

a generic obd code reader won't read abs codes.

A lead for TOAF ( a diagnostics program by some Polish enthusiasts ) would be a better purchase - the thread at https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=328157 is quite recent and highlights a confirmed working lead for the software.
If you enter TOAF into the search bar you find information and advice about the program but nobody has ever produced a guide for using it so some care and thought would be advisable if you go down that route.

Whilst you're pondering that Steve, have a look in the front wheelarches. Is there an ABS sensor lead flapping about and showing damage by contact with the tyre when the steering is on full lock?

If your speedo has stopped working, it's the R.H. (OSF) sensor, if you no longer have cruise control it's the L.H. (NSF) sensor. If it's neither of these then it's more than likely to be a problem at the rear and not necessarily a failed sensor.

Many thanks SD1too and bigblue75, I'll have a look at that software and check the sensors. Speedo is still working - will try cruise today-never tried it before.

Have a set of new sensors so hope it's one of those.

If it's not the rear-what else could it be? i'm assuming the ABS control unit?

It's not always the sensor at a wheel that is causing the fault...

if you search the forum for abs fault then read through threads from the results returned, it will explain the system in better detail. TOAF would assist by narrowing down the fault but it would still require investigation at the offending wheel/ wiring/ sensor.

Thanks will have a look.

Cruise is working so both fronts must be ok.

Light now on straightaway.

Had a read.

Will check voltage supply to sensors and check output signal when wheel rotated.

Other possible cause could be rear wheel bearings.

Will give it a go.
