I don't know if Big Russ does house calls - he is at Liversedge ( exit 25 off the M62 ) . It may be worth asking .

I know BigRuss and have been to him for more minor stuff, but I think he doesn't want to be doing so much scrambling around under cars anymore.

You are and progress would be faster if you don't mind carrying out some tests for yourself rather than chasing garages.

You've said that the engine runs at normal temperature and then the gauge goes up to the top and the 'engine overheat' warning message comes on.
You've also performed the demist test and heard the radiator fan running.
With this in mind, the most likely reason for overheating is that your thermostat is not opening and so water is unable to flow through the radiator. I can tell you how to verify this for yourself without needing any tools. Let me know if you're interested.

To the left of the air filter box you will see a large diameter coolant hose containing a bleed screw (round, black plastic with a slotted head and serrated circumference).
Run the engine with the air conditioning off and wait until the radiator fan starts running.
Put the palm of your hand around the large diameter hose. Does it feel very hot?
