I can thoroughly recommend it, have run to the Algarve solo, with caravan on the back and in motorhome via tunnel through France and via ferry to Santander just love it. Hoping to do it again in car but tied down at mo with an elderly pooch that's never been in kennels. Makes you realise just how much a disgrace our roads are!

Thanks, everyone, for the positive responses ! We're really looking forward to the trip and the chance to explore France again - I've not been over there for about 20 years I'm sure the car will be fine and the spares box will (hopefully) remain unopened

The only problem, not mine, we came across while travelling south through Bordeaux, was an English couple whose satnav had gone ‘off line’. He was on his way back to an hotel just outside Calais. Told him to stay on that m/way and it would take him to Calais. Only thing I have had happen was a bad connection on a brake light connection in Germany outside my sons house. Bit of emery paper and a good rub and everything was ok. Perhaps we have been lucky over the 30 odd years we have been going over there.

Just a quick update and thank you to all those that replied to this thread

We're now back home after 1250 miles driving on the 'wrong' side The collection of spares and my toolbox remained completely untouched for the whole holiday, and our breakdown cover wasn't used either

We had a great time, the weather was perfect (nice & warm, around 25°C most days) and the air con worked perfectly throughout the trip.

I was also amazed at how many Rovers are left on the French roads - we saw:

3 x 75 saloons
1 x ZT
3 x 25s (all in silver)
1 x MG ZR
1 x Rover 600 - obviously enthusiasts as they flashed & waved !

We actually saw more MG Rover products across the water than during our trip to Scotland earlier this year, which I'm guessing is down to the warmer climate, smoother roads (no pot holes) and possibly an abscence of salt in the winter ?

Thanks again and highly recommended to anyone else that fancies trying a different culture and enjoys exploring new places

Happy all went well
I'm in Milan at the moment in my jaguar XK8 convertible with a grumbling front wheel bearing hoping it'll do another 1500 miles before I get home next week.
You wouldn't put that in the car spares needed.

Funnily enough, I did strip, clean and thoroughly re-grease the rear wheel bearings as part of the pre-trip preparations. The grease was very dry & solid (probably original from factory), so at almost 175k I thought it only fair to treat them to some new lubrication

On a different note, we did visit 'The Machines' in Nantes - what an absolutely amazing place, the exhibits/displays are quite incredible, only the French could come up with something so different and brilliantly built !

There are two others in France, a dragon in Calais, a minataur, spider that visited Liverpool and more in Toulouse. There's also a machine park in Spain
