The correct size being 215/55/16, the difference is like 18" wheels on 40s rather than 45s, the difference in comfort level being marked.

Sorry but I failed to put in the post that I bought tyres with XL (extra load) on them. The sidewalls are very stiff when you push them with your finger. Impossible to test for tyre pressures that way. I did not think that the XL would mean that the sidewalls would be so stiff as to be like bricks. Won’t happen again.
