Yes, I also think the turbocharger grows. But mine's more of a gravelly howl than a hiss. Mine does is when accelerating, specifically at the point when you press the clutch to go up a gear. Like on the over-run. Don't know what the mechanism is, but it's definitely emanating from the lower left as I'm driving, which is where the turbo is. It sounds like a 'resonance' in the exhaust pipe.
